Pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but _The Sandman Papers_ came out a
cuple of days ago. I got my copies in the mail today.
It's mainly about Gaiman and the Sandman comics, but my Discworld witches
paper appears in it as well. So if you like lit crit, it might be worth a
look.

Me Too.
I really like Sandman so this definitely goes on the Must Buy list - along
with the latest collected Lucifer.
Thanks for the heads up

Two more issues to go for me, then it's done.
BTW, I feel forced to plug Mike Carey's novel at you.

<looks at Amazon.co.uk>
Hmmm! Not just novel but novelS. Felix Castor. Looks interesting. Is The
Devil You Know the first one? Amazon isn't being too clear on that point.
The synopsis is also conspicuous by it's absence. Like peachy I would be
grateful for more pluggage, I mean information.

Yes. Vicious Circle is to follow in early 2007, and the third one is
already written. It's also been optioned, for TV IIRC.
> The synopsis is also conspicuous by it's absence. Like peachy I would be

Fairly simple. It's an alternate London, where demons and zombies exist and
most houses have wards against ghosts. The protagonist, Felix Castor, is a
freelance exorcist dragged out of retirement to rid an archive building of a
stray spectre. In the course of preparing for the job, he discovers a
mystery behind the ghost's death and decides to investigate.

Look on the up side - it's a paperback original.

I should maye say that although the cover price is $18.95, Amazon seems to
have it for $12.
I do want to reiterate that I mention in *here* because there's a Pratchett
(that is, about Pratchett) essay in it and because you lot are my friends.
There's a certain amount of overlap between Gaiman fans and Pratchett fans,
but it's the Discworld essay that's my main reason for mentioning the book.
Which might mean it should be [R].

Not to mention some overlap between Pratchett and Gaiman's work. Terry
frequently comments on witches coming in 3s - Maiden, Mother and Crone and
it's a theme/motif that pops up constantly throughout Sandman, most notably
with the frequent appearance by the Three Fates.
I would guess that this overlap is the reason your DW essay got into a
Sandman Lit Crit book
In addition, there is also the portrayal of Death as a sympathetic character
and that the afterlife you end up with is the one that you think you ought
to get

That's specifically what the essay is about, didn't I say?
Joe Sanders (the editor of the book)and I wrote a joint paper about the MMC
in the Discworld and Sandman comics.
So, yes . . . that's it in a nutshell. Joe wrote about the Fates, and I
wrote about the Witches.

It is. Just to be clear, I know the editor of the book very well. He walked
me down the aisle at my wedding and has been a mentor for over ten years. We
collaborated to write two halves of one chapter on the goddess mythology. I
had doubts about including mine, but he made it work pretty well, I think.

But in both cases they draw on old folklore. In both Norse and Greek
mythology, the fates are three women, representing past, present and
future.
The MMC combo is also found in many traditions, as a representation of
the three stages of a woman's life, or the three aspects of womanhood -
bringer of joy, nurturer, keeper of wisdom. Christianity, in its
ineffable wisdom, changed it to MMW, representing innocense, nurturing
and tempation.

I titled the joint essay.
It's called "Reinventing the Spiel."

English, but the German's not too bad. Spiel is play, yes? "Spielen zie
schach" is one of the few phrsases I retain from HS German, and I'm not sure
I spelled it right.

Close enough, and I keep saying students of foreign languages shouldn't
be bothered with spelling anyway, as it's only distracting from the
pronunciation.

Nope. You just mentioned your "Discworld witches paper appears in it [the
Sandman paper] but didn't mention the crossover.

Sounds very interesting. I think I'd enjoy reading that paper. And I can
think of loads of possibilities for critting Sandman so the whole book must
be worth a look. Definitely on the Must Buy list.
